Common types of printing paper

Monday, March 6, 2023

Not just designers and print professionals need to know about paper types. Businesses, units, organizations that often have to print, or even individual users (students, office workers, friends playing paper models - paper craft, making handmade cards - handmade ...) should also have some basic knowledge of different paper types. This helps you choose the right paper and service and save money.

Speaking of paper, there is a way to call it as follows:

Paper type name + quantification

Paper name:  There are many types, and there will be a concept of common paper types (refer to below).

Quantification:  Weight in grams/m2 (refer to below)

For example, Glossy 210 means a type of paper called Glossy (also known as photo paper), weighing 210g/m2 of paper.

Paper Types

Ford paper:  This is the most common and common type of paper, most commonly A4 paper, in photo shops.

Quantities are usually 70-80-90g/m2…

Ford paper has a rough surface, good ink adhesion (so the ink is not very good), and is also used for large envelopes, small envelopes, note paper, letterhead, invoices, student notebooks, .etc.

Bristol paper:  Has a slightly glossy, smooth surface and moderately good ink adhesion, so offset printing is beautiful; often used to print soap boxes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, shirt covers, brochures, cards, flyers, posters, cards, Weddings, invitations .etc.

Quantification is usually found at 230 – 350g/m2.

Ivory paper is similar to Bristol, but only one side is smooth, and the other side is rough, usually located inside the product (Paper used for food packaging usually has to be tested for food safety when used. in making cans and food packaging).

Couche paper: The type usually has a glossy, smooth, shiny surface and eye-catching and bright printing (so the writing is reflective and dazzling when catching light). Used to print flyers, catalogs, posters, brochures, .etc.

Quantification is about 90-300g/m2

In addition, there is also Couche Matt, which is similar but does not reflect light, often used to print high-end magazines.

Duplex paper: Has a white and smooth surface similar to Bristol; the other side is usually dark, like mache. Often used to print product boxes of relatively large size, they need to be firm and firm because the quantity is generally over 300g/m2.

Crystal paper: has a very glossy side almost covered with glossy glue; the other side is rough, often used as an intermediate between Bristol paper and Couche paper, depending on the purpose of product requirements.

In addition, there is fine art paper, lamination, gold inlaid, silver, .etc. Print certificates of merit, wedding cards, .etc; all kinds of carbon paper, carton paper, and many more.

Quantitative paper:

Paper weight is the weight of 1 square meter of paper (gms). Paper weight is usually proportional to its thickness and hardness of it.

Ordinary printing paper weighs 80gms - 300gms (depending on the type), especially carton paper, which can reach a weight of 2000gms.

Thin type like BigC quotation book 60gms - 65gms, or name card usually used from 250gms-300gms.

The size of Paper (paper size):

Many paper ratio standards are used in different countries and at different stages. However, today, two measures are commonly used and almost default as common standards for all countries, the World Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard system. A4, A3, B3, C3, .etc) and the traditional method used in North America (standard for letters, legal, ledger, and so on).

These two ratio systems have been applied to most stationery applications (word, excel, .etc.) and printing and photocopying equipment.

International Standards (ISO)

– Dimensions always write the shorter dimension first.

– All paper sizes in series A, B, and C are rectangles with the ratio of 2 sides is the square root of 2, approximately 1.414. The area of the A0 paper is specified as one m².

– The edges of the A0 size are therefore defined as 841×1189mm

– The paper sizes in the same series are in reverse order; the next paper size has an area equal to 50% of the site of the previous paper size (divided by cutting the last length of paper along a cut parallel to the short side).

North American Standard

– The current standard size of American paper is based on the following original sizes: “Letter,” “Legal,” and “Ledger.” Tabloids” are extended sizes for everyday work. Letter size based on inches (8.5″ x 11″ = 215.9mm x 279.4mm)
